Mention sun protection, most people think of skin protection, and rarely think of eye protection. Instead, surveys show that ultraviolet radiation is the main cause of some eye diseases, such as keratitis, cataracts, retinal damage. Hence, for health sake, eyes deserve our special attention.
Don't look directly into the sun. Eyes are extremely weak. If one looks at sun directly for a moment, he/she may be dizzy to watch. Direct view to sun for a long time may bring about damage to eye and retina, accompanied with pain, tears, inflammation and blurred vision.
It is well known that eyes are the most sensitive part to the ultraviolet radiation and they can widely absorb UV rays of different wavelengths. The ultraviolet radiation with 280nm wavelength does the most damage to the cornea, and it is the cause of conjunctivitis. The 290-400nm ultraviolet radiation does damage to the lens and would result in cataract. Surveys show that if you bask yourself in the sun for one more hour every day, the rate that you get cataract increase 10%.And now we should talk about some precautions.
Wear hat or raise a parasol when you are outing. At the same time you can wear bifocal eyeglasses which are also effective in protecting eyes from sunshine. It's important to note that the progressive glasses should be good in respect of quality. If your sunglasses are poor in quality, your eyes will suffer instead of benefit. You'd better choose a pair of quality sunglasses that can block UV rays. Medical research shows that it is unnecessary to choose lenses with too dark color. Grey and light grey are more effective in blocking UV rays. People wearing contact lenses can buy UV-protective ones which are able to block 90% ultraviolet radiation. It would be safer to add a pair of progressive eyewear. The sun is strongest at noon, which is harmful to both your skin and eyes. You'd better stay at home without going out.  #
